Removing VAT divides by (1 + rate) — it is not the same as subtracting the rate. Taking 20% off a gross price over-removes the tax.
Value-added tax shows up in two directions: you have a net price and need the gross (adding VAT), or you have a VAT-inclusive total and need the net (extracting it — for an expense claim or invoice breakdown, say). The second direction is where errors live: removing 20% VAT is not subtracting 20%. The correct move divides by 1.20, and the difference on a £120 receipt is real money on every line of a ledger.
This calculator handles any rate, so it covers VAT in the UK and EU, GST in Australia, India, and elsewhere, and sales-tax-style additions anywhere a flat percentage applies.
How to use the vat / gst calculator

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a price correctly?
Divide the gross price by (1 + rate). For 20% VAT: gross ÷ 1.20 = net. Subtracting 20% from the gross instead over-removes the tax — on £120 it gives £96 instead of the correct £100.
What are common VAT/GST rates?
UK 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Ireland 23%, Australia GST 10%, New Zealand 15%, India GST commonly 5/12/18/28% depending on the goods. Always confirm the rate that applies to your specific category.
Does this work for US sales tax?
Mathematically yes — US sales tax is also a flat percentage added to a net price. Enter your combined state + local rate.
